Scrofula is the word we use today but in the past it was known as The King's Evil. We can treat it very easily but then if you were unfortunate enough to get it then it was really difficult to get rid of. Sometimes the treatment was more deadly than the cure. So it was that in Medieval times, Edward the Confessor of England made a habit of laying hands on those afflicted - and, so legend has it - he cured many.
